The first phase of a project to investigate durability of concrete structures in aggressive marine environment has started in Cuba. Through a joint collaboration between Swiss institutions (ETHZ, EPFL, SDC) and Cuban institutions (MICONS, MITRANS, UCLV) the first 20m girder made with LC3 concrete has been finalized. Sensors developed by IfB have been placed inside concrete to measure pH (carbonation), chloride and corrosion. A reference block has been cast for further measurements. Another girder and reference block made with PC shall be cast and sensor will also be placed. The girder is part of a bridge offshore in northern part of Cuba.
